An unfortunate high school student, Ayasaki Hayate spends his days working at part-time jobs to support his extravagant parents. After incurring a debt of 150 million yen, they disappear, and Hayate was left holding the bag. Whilst running away from the debt collectors, he tries to kidnap a girl for ransom (however, the girl misunderstands his intentions and thinks he is confessing his love to her). Almost immediately, he botches the kidnap attempt but then manages to save her from other kidnappers, causing her to fall in love with him. The girl, Sanzenin Nagi, is actually the daughter of a millionaire family. In recognition of his services, she hires Hayate as a resident butler and even pays off the debt collectors. Now is the beginning of an age filled with beautiful underage mistresses who crazy in love with the world's handsomest butler... Who am I kidding, of course not! Now is the challenge of being servant to a dark mistress whose lair filled with minions, wild animals, dangerous seductresses, and lost manuals of forgotten treasures... hang on, it's not right! Let's try again! Now is the beginning of the age of shut-in hermits, indoor neets, murderous harems, cursed treasures of ancients, unrequitted love, and double suicides.... maybe not the doublesuicides then.

If you are curious about the anime in relation to the manga the first season follows the manga through episode 19 then the second seasons starts off from there closely following the manga, if you would like to enjoy the anime with it mirroring the manga watch it in that sequence. The second season of the anime ends at chapter 147 which is in the middle of Volume 14.
