One-third of the world is under the governance of the monolithic nation of the Holy Empire of Britannia. Their command of humanoid weapons called Knightmare Frames makes their military might overwhelming. Japan is ruled by Britannia, and the entire occupied territory becomes the single "Area 11." The Japanese people are called "Elevens," their freedom and traditions, rights and pride stolen away from them.
But in this world there are those who resist: The Black Knights -- a militia group headed by a masked man named "Zero." However, after a massive decisive battle in the Tokyo Settlement, Zero disappears, his identity still unknown...
One year later, Lelouch Lamperouge is spending his days in boredom. Unchanging, the Black Knight uprising of Area 11 did no more than invite further suppression by Britannia.
